The purple Thistle is the national emblem of Scotland. When warring Norsemen attempted to surprise a Scottish encampment by traveling across thistle covered land during a night attack all mayhem enthused! The resulting cries alerted the Scots and the attack was thwarted. The Thistle became a national symbol with the motto "Nemo me impune lacessit" - translating as "What dares meddle with me?"
